France will start intercepting migrant vessels in English Channel after UK pressure

France has agreed to begin stopping migrant vessels in the English Channel, following an extended period of insistence from the United Kingdom.

This policy shift comes after the Prime Minister wrote to the French leader asking him to back the initiative and stating there presently "have no effective deterrent" in the Channel.

French security forces have been authorized to intercept the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their passengers, according to authoritative statements.

French police have rarely acted to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the shoreline because it is viewed as too great a risk to both officers and civilians.

"It is essential that we implement these tactics this month... We have zero effective deterrent in the Channel waters."

Currently, a French naval police spokesperson says officers will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting human life.

Significantly, the official excluded the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been suggested as a possible method to snarl the engines of the boats.

The decision to intervene at all is a significant advancement, following a brief change towards a stricter approach this warmer season, which dropped off when the former government official departed from government.

That was highlighted in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed wading into the sea to damage the hulls of a boat.

Currently French authorities will once more be allowed to intercept boats before they collect asylum-seeking individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, although it's uncertain how the small boats will be stopped.

Powerful gusts are currently postponing the start of intervention operations and the human trafficking gangs will be looking for methods to adapt to avoid detection, as they have frequently done in the previous instances.

The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for response.
